A Quick Look at
304 Stainless Steel

304 stainless steel is one of the most common types of stainless steel and is part of the more extensive 300 series of stainless steel. It is an austenitic alloy, which refers to its crystal structure. 304 stainless is non-magnetic and has a high level of chromium and nickel, providing excellent corrosion resistance and good mechanical properties, making it a great choice for components that will be used in challenging environments such as medical equipment, refrigeration, marine environments, pressure systems, and more.

    • Tensile Strength MPa: 700

    • Yield Strength MPa: 425

    • Elongation: 33%

    • Hardness ~90Rb

  • S30400, CF8

  • 304 Stainless has the following composition:

    Carbon: .08%

    Silicon: 1.00%

    Manganese: 2.00%

    Phosphorus: 0.045%

    Sulfur: 0.03%

    Chromium: 18-20%

    Nickel: 8-11%

What Industries Use
304 Stainless Steel Castings

304 stainless steel is a super versatile alloy used in hundreds of industries. It offers high strength while retaining ductility and is also heat, oxidation, and corrosion resistant. Below, we’ll explore just a few industries that can benefit from utilizing 304 stainless castings.

Medical

With inherent sterile/antimicrobial properties and corrosion resistance, stainless steel is a go-to choice for many medical components, including surgical and laboratory equipment, tools, and more.

Aircraft

304 Stainless has good heat resistance and sharp esthetic make it a frequently used choice in aircraft, especially in exhaust components.

Food Processing

Wear resistance and cleanliness are paramount in food processing, making 304 stainless steel a great choice for components such as pressure vessels, mills, refrigeration, machinery, and more.

Military

Stainless steel is a tough, versatile material frequently found in military applications from mess kits to missile systems.

Marine

Day in, day out exposure to salt water makes stainless steel a staple in the marine industry. Often being found in pressure vessels, pumps, valves, water filtration equipment, and more.

Oil & Gas

Heat and corrosion resistance make stainless steel invaluable in the oil, gas, and petrochemical industries. 304 stainless is frequently found in pumps, valves, and pressure vessels.
